Cody and Read garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors

Bemidji State University forwards Erin Cody (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) and Matt Read (Sr., Ilderton, Ontario) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after posting outstanding athletic accomplishments during the week of Nov. 8-14.

Cody recorded three points for the BSU women’s hockey team last weekend, netting a goal and two assists versus No. 8 University of North Dakota. In Bemidji State’s third victory versus a nationally-ranked team this season, Cody netted the first goal in Friday’s contest. She then picked up the assist on the game-winner scored by Emily Erickson (So., F, Coleraine, Minn.). In Saturday’s contest she tallied an assist on Sadie Lunquist’s (So., F, Cloquet, Minn.) goal.

Just like in the previous four games, Cody again had a hand in every BSU goal in the series. The Roseville, Minn. native has contributed to each of the Beavers’ last 16 goals, dating back to the second goal scored against then-No. 1 Mercyhurst on Oct. 16.

This week’s award marks the fourth occasion of Cody’s career, and the second time this season, that Beaver Pride has recognized the Roseville, Minn. native as an athlete of the week.  Following her own selection Nov. 3 and the Sept. 20 recognition of Alaina McElhinney (Jr., G, Calgary, Alberta), Cody’s selection marks the third time in 2010-11 a member of the BSU women’s hockey team has been honored by the organization.

Read led Bemidji State with five points (4-1=5) in a series split with University of Alaska Anchorage Nov. 12-13.  The senior posted a pair of goals in Friday’s 5-4 loss before contributing to three of the Beavers’ four goals, two goals and an assist, in a 4-0 shutout of the Seawolves Saturday.  Read’s second goal Saturday night marked the 50th of his collegiate career, while his assist in the game, his 69th as a Beaver, moved him into a tie for the top spot on BSU Division I-era career assists list.  Read finished the weekend with a team-best eight shots on goal and a +2 plus/minus rating.

Read becomes the second member of the BSU men’s hockey team to garner the award in 2010-11 as he follows Jordan George (So., F, Madison, Wis.), who was selected for the honor last week.  It also marks the fifth time Read has named Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week dating back to the 2008-09 season.

The Bemidji State men’s hockey team (2-5-1; 2-5-1 WCHA) travels to No. 14 University of Denver for a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series this weekend.  The two-game set gets underway Friday at 8:37 p.m. CST and will conclude with a 8:07 p.m. contest Saturday.  Both games will be played at Magness Arena.

Cody and the BSU women’s hockey team, which are 5-1-1 in their last seven contests and are 6-5-1 overall and 4-3-1-1 in WCHA play, have this week off to recuperate and regroup before traveling to Columbus, Ohio for a league match up with the Ohio State University Nov. 26-27.
