Bemidji State continues home slate Friday versus Mayville State
The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team hosts Mayville State University at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 at BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers and Comets meet for the 16th straight season and fifth between BSU Head Coach Chelsea DeVille and MSU Head Coach Dennis Hutter.
The Beavers hold a 34-5 lead in the all-time series, including a 13-game winning streak against the Comets. Bemidji State took the most recent meeting against Mayville State last season, 78-71, at BSU Gymnasium. MSU came out last season with a 20-18 lead after the first quarter before BSU answered with 21 second-quarter points for a one-point lead at halftime. The Beavers continued to outscored the Comets over the second half to hold on to the win.
Junior guard Sydney Zerr led all BSU returners in last season’s game against MSU with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. She added three assists and two rebounds in 35 minutes. Junior center Taylor Bray also reached double-digit scoring from the starting lineup with 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting. She chipped in eight rebounds to pace the Beavers.
Bemidji State moved to 2-1 to begin the season after a 62-46 win during its home opener Tuesday against Valley City State University. The Beavers snapped a two-game losing streak in the series against Vikings with the win.
The Beavers were led by the scoring duo of sophomore forward Claire Wolhowe with a career-high 18 points and junior guard Brooklyn Bachmann with 15. The duo combined for an 11-0 run that put BSU ahead, 11-4, midway through the opening quarter before the Beaver defense helped the team go into halftime with a 22-12 lead. Bemidji State pulled away in the fourth quarter behind an 18-4 run to take a 23-point, 58-35 lead.
Wolhowe finished the game shooting 6-of-10 from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc in 28 minutes played. Bachmann shot 4-of-10 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw line with four rebounds and three steals.
Bemidji State’s defense currently ranks third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference allowing 53.3 points per game. The Beavers also rank third in the conference holding opponents to 31.2 percent from the floor. On the boards, BSU ranks second in the league with 42.7 rebounds per game and fifth with 12.0 offensive boards per game.
Head Coach Chelsea DeVille enters her fifth season with the program after totaling a 25-86 record with the Beavers. Assistant coach Jamie Schultz begins her fourth season with the program while Micheal Poncelet begins his first.
