The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team and Minnesota State University, Mankato skated to a 2-2 tie Thursday afternoon while senior Kara Werth was the lone skater to score in the shootout to earn the extra point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings for the Beavers (1-1-1, 1-1-1 WCHA).
Senior Paige Beebe and junior Ellie Moser scored goals for the Beavers while senior Kerigan Dowhy stopped 27-of-29 shots by the Mavericks and denied all four attempts in the shootout.
Bemidji State opened the scoring in the game just 6:40 into the opening period when Paige Beebe received a saucer pass from Clair DeGeorge and beat goaltender Calla Frank five hole for her first goal of the season. The first period ended with the 1-0 led for the Beavers but 9:36 into the second period, Minnesota State’s Brittyn Fleming tied the game with her second goal of the season.
The Beavers responded before the period’s end when Ellie Moser received a backdoor pass from Graysen Myers and buried her second goal of the season at 16:15 of the frame. However, Bemidji State’s lead didn’t last long when Jamie Nelson capitalized on a BSU turnover and sniped the puck past Dowhy just 1:58 after Moser’s goal.
The third period was a close battle between the two teams with neither one wanting to surrender the game-winning goal. Dowhy shined in net during the period and stopped all 12 shots by the Mavericks to send the Beavers to their third consecutive overtime.
In the three-on-three overtime, Bemdiji State held the Mavericks to no shots on goal but Frank denied the only two shots the Beavers could muster in the period and each team headed to the shootout to determine who gets the extra point in the WCHA standings.
The shootout would go four rounds and senior Kara Werth scored the lone goal to win the shootout for Bemidji State 1-0 and two points in the standings.
Bemidji State and Minnesota State close out their series Friday at 2:07 p.m., and will also be the final game of the 2020 calendar year.
