St. Cloud State University goaltender Emma Polusny turned aside 33-of-34 shots by the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team to stymie the Beavers and earn a 3-1 victory in game one of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series, Friday night.

The Beavers have now lost six consecutive games and fall to 1-7-1 (1-7-1 WCHA) on the season. Senior Paige Beebe netted the lone goal for the Beavers while senior Kerigan Dowhy made 14-of-16 saves.

Bemidji State got off to an early start in the game and just 4:02 into the opening period, Paige Beebe netted her third goal of the season after being left alone in front of the net. The Beavers dominated play during the period and outshot the Huskies 10-3 in the frame and held the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Just as quickly as the Beavers’ lead came, it disappeared just as quick. 2:22 into the second frame, St. Cloud State freshman Nicole Ness scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game. The Huskies then took the lead 8:57 later when Emma Gentry scored at the 11:19. SCSU carried the one-goal lead into the second intermission but were outshot on the scoreboard, 27-9 by the Beavers.

Bemidji State gave its all during the third period and produced seven shots on goal but St. Cloud State’s defense and goaltender Polusny prevailed and turned aside all seven shots to claim victory. The Huskies sealed the victory with an empty-net, power-play goal with just 20 seconds remaining.

Bemidji State’s penalty kill was excellent tonight and only gave up the empty-net, power-play goal on four chances by the Huskies.
