Beavers split doubleheader at MSU-Moorhead, Travel To WInona and Upper Iowa

The Bemidji State University softball team split its doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Minnesota State University, Moorhead to continue the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule. The Beavers (8-18, 4-8 NSIC) defeated the Dragons (6-20, 4-8 NSIC) in game one 7-4 but fell in extra innings in game two, 2-1.

Bemidji State began the doubleheader with a 7-4 victory to snap its four-game losing streak. The Dragons out-hit the Beavers 12-7 in the game but the pitching combination of senior Stephi Dullum and freshman Stella Dolan stranded 10 baserunners during the game.

Five Beavers recorded an RBI in the game including two from sophomore Ashley Herold who batted 1-for-3 while senior Sami Dullum batting 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored and Stephi Dullum went 1-for-4 with a double and RBI. Bemidji State batted 4-for-6 when runners were in scoring position compared to just 3-for-9 for the Dragons.

Senior Lisa Kossan was a factor on the basepaths after she batted 1-for-3 with an RBI, stole two bases and scored one run.

Stephi Dullum earned her sixth win of the season and improves to 6-3 after pitching four innings and allowed three runs off of nine hits while Dolan earned her second save of the season after pitching three innings in relief and allowed just one run off of three hits and earned four strikeouts.

Game two was a pitching duel between junior Kaidron McClafferty and Dragons’ pitcher Anna Lang. McClafferty pitched 7.2 innings and only allowed two runs off of five hits but allowed the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. McClafferty falls to 0-5 on the season despite only allowing two runs off of five hits.

Bemidji State’s offense totaled just four hits in the game and Stephi Dullum drove in the Beavers’ lone run in the game in the sixth inning off a sacrifice fly.

Bemidji State returns to action next weekend when it travels to Winona State University to face the Warriors in a doubleheader Saturday, April 17.
