Beaver Women’s Hockey Gameday – Game 10 – November 7, 2021 – at Wisconsin

Sophomore goaltender Hannah Hogenson powered the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team to a 0-0 tie at No. 1 University of Wisconsin by stopping a career-high 56 shots to earn her first career shutout. The Beavers (2-5-2, 1-5-1 WCHA) and Badgers (12-0-1, 8-0-1 WCHA) skated to a tie after 65 minutes of scoreless hockey but Wisconsin earned the extra point in Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a 1-0 shootout victory.

Hogenson’s 56 saves are tied for seventh most in a single game in program history (Janet Hicks-1999, Alana McElhinney-2010). Bemidji State earns one point in league standings for a total of four on the season while the top-ranked Badgers earn two.

The tie is just the fifth in program history against Wisconsin and just the second time BSU has tied Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., since the two teams began playing in 1999. The Beavers last tied the Badgers in Madison back on Oct. 10, 2012, a 3-3 shootout loss.

Bemidji State was out-shot in the game, 56-14, with Hogenson stopping 13 shots in the first period, 19 in the second, 19 in the third and five during the three-on-three overtime period.

Wisconsin fifth-year senior Daryl Watts scored the lone goal in the shootout and goaltender Kennedy Blair denied Graysen Myers, Alyssa Watkins and Claudia Verkerke for the 1-0 shootout victory.

Bemidji State didn’t earn a power play during the game but it’s penalty kill denied the Badgers on the power play on all three of their chances including a 4-on-3 power play during the overtime period. Hogenson turned aside all five shots by Wisconsin during the power play.

BSU’s defense also helped Hogenson by blocking a season-high 27 shots including a team-high six by freshman defender Ella Anick.

The Beavers ended an 18-game winning streak for the Badgers that dated back to last year’s national championship run and now moves it to a 19-game unbeaten streak.

Bemidji State will try to shock the top-ranked Badgers again tomorrow afternoon when the two teams meet for game two of their WCHA series. Puck drop is slated for 2:01 p.m., at LaBahn Arena in Madison.
