Football on the Road…Soccer Might Be

The NCAA announced the field for the NCAA-d2 football playoffs, and Bemidji State is in the field for the first time ever. But, and a big but, Bemidji State falls from a position of hosting in the first round, to now going on the road. To make things even more interesting, BSU travels to Augustana, a fellow conference opponent.

Colorado School of Mines gets the #1 seed, and face the Augie / BSU winner. Angelo State is the #2 seed, and hosts MN Duluth. Western Colorado is the #3 seed, and hosts Nebraska Kearney. Augustana is the final home team, as the #4 seed, and host Bemidji State.

The Beavers last lost to Augustana for Homecoming. It was BSU’s last loss in the regular season. Bemidji State has never made the NCAA Tournament field. There are four regionals. The top team in each region gets a first round bye. Seeds #2 through #4 host. The final three seeds can come from any regional, taking into account ease of travel.

Augustana is making their sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. UMD is making their 12th. Due to COvid, there hasn’t been a D-2 football tournament since 2019.

In soccer, the BSU Beavers lost to MSU-Mankato on Sunday afternoon in the NSIC Championship game. That likely puts the Beavers on the road in the playoffs this weekend. Bemidji State now 18-1-2 overall, will now await its tournament fate. The Beavers, participants in the national tournament in 2017 and 2018 hope to make a third appearance this season.

The complete 56-team NCAA Division II Championship field will be announced Monday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m. live on NCAA.com.
