Men’s Basketball opens four-game homestand Jan. 28-29 versus AU, WSC

Bemidji State University men’s basketball begins a four-game home stand Jan. 28-29 as it welcomes in Augustana University and Wayne State College to BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers and Vikings open the weekend at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Beavers and Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. in Bemidji, Minn.

Bemidji State University men’s basketball begins a four-game home stand Jan. 28-29 as it welcomes in Augustana University and Wayne State College to BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers and Vikings open the weekend at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Beavers and Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. in Bemidji, Minn.

BSU’s losing streak continued following road losses of 72-65 to the University of Sioux Falls and 72-64 at Southwest Minnesota State University. The Beavers’ last six losses have come by eight points or fewer.

The Beavers shot over 53 percent from the field in the first half of Friday’s loss at the Cougars. After trailing by one at halftime, 32-31, BSU finished the final 12:52 of the game shooting 5-of-20 from the floor and 1-of-11 from beyond the arc with six turnovers given away. During the same stretch, USF went 11-of-22 from the field and 10-of-10 from the free throw line to overcome a 14-point lead by BSU.

Kone led all scorers with 21 points, his third 20-point game of the season, on 8-of-20 shooting with seven assists and five rebounds. Sophomore forward John Sutherland followed with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting while senior guard Travis Bianco scored 13 points with a team-high nine rebounds.

The Beavers led by as many as three points early Saturday against the Mustangs before SMSU went on a 21-10 run over a nearly 10-minute span to near the first half. BSU closed the gap to four at halftime and took the lead early in the second half. SMSU took control of the game following an 11-2 run and took a game-high, 15-point lead with two minutes to play.

Sophomore forward John Sutherland led all players with 11 rebounds and added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. Six of his rebounds came on the offensive end, leading BSU to 17 offensive rebounds and 20 second-chance points as a team. Senior guards Mohamed Kone and Gare Ewefada paced the Beavers in scoring with 12 points each while fellow senior guard Tyler Behrendt added 11 points with three 3-pointers.

BSU has featured a 20-point scorer in six of its last seven games, including three from senior guard Travis Bianco.

Thompson continued to climb the scoring and rebounding charts at Bemidji State, currently sitting fourth all-time with 1,459 points and moving into third with 646 rebounds, surpassing Scott Kramer. He also holds the record for the most games played in at BSU and is two starts away from setting the program record for most career games started.
