Bemidji State travels to face MSU Moorhead and Northern State this weekend

The Bemidji State University Men’s Basketball team will be on the road this weekend as they start the weekend in Moorhead, Minn., as the Beavers take on Minnesota State University, Moorhead on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The following day Bemidji State tips-off against Northern State University at 6 p.m., in Aberdeen, S.D.
 
The Series vs MSU Moorhead
·         MSU Moorhead leads the all-time series against Bemidji State, 84-55.
·         The Beavers and Dragons last met Feb. 12, 2022, with an 83-77 win by MSUM in Moorhead, Minn.
·         MSU Moorhead leads the series 48-19 when hosting Bemidji State.
·         BSU and MSUM first met Jan. 14, 1950, an 61-57 win by MSUM.

The Series vs Northern State
·         Northern State leads the all-time series against Bemidji State, 69-27.
·         The Beavers and Wolves last met Feb. 11, 2022, with an 83-60 win by NSU in Aberdeen, S.D.
·         Northern State leads the series 38-9 when hosting Bemidji State.
·         BSU and NSU first met Dec. 8, 1959, an 78-48 win by BSU.
 

Fast Break Bemidji State

BSU is coming off the weekend with two losses to (RV) University of Minnesota, Duluth, 68-83 and St. Cloud State University, 70-81 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.  

The leading scorers on the weekend were Mohamed Kone and John Sutherland finishing with 33 and 32 points respectively. Kone dropped 21 points in the game against Minnesota Duluth, his second scoring over 20 points this season.

Sutherland coming off his NSIC North Division Player of the Week recorded his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the loss to St. Cloud State.

Bemidji State were able converting on 45% of its shots on the weekend and is still above .500 on the season. 

Leading the scoring for the Beavers is Sutherland who has put up double-figures in each game totaling 143 points on the season. Sutherland is leading the conference shooting .617 through eight games.

Sutherland is also leading the team in rebounds averaging 8.6 per game and is fourth in the NSIC with 69 boards. 

Bemidji State is second in the NSIC in points per game with 85.6 and is 13th in scoring defense allowing 77.6 points per game.  

Kone is leading the Beavers in assists with 32 after dishing out eight in the last two games.

BSU is second in field goal percentage (.505) and 3-point field goal percentage (.411). 

The Beavers are 15th in turnovers and are tied for seventh in assist to turnover ratio with a 1.19 ratio.

Scouting MSU Moorhead 

Head Coach Tim Bergstraser starts his first season with the Dragons (7-2) after being named in the 50 Impactful Division II Assistant Coaches list.

MSUM (7-2, 2-1 NSIC) came away with big conference wins over Minot State University, 84-63 and University of Mary 88-55 last weekend

MSUM averages 78.1 points per game shooting 46.4% from the field and 34.6% from behind the arc.

The Dragons are led by sophomore guard Jacob Beeninga and seiner guard Lorenzo McGhee who average 15.4 and 14.3 points per game, respectively.

Scouting Northern State

Head Coach Saul Phillips starts his fourth season with the Wolves (71-23).

NSU (6-3, 2-1 NSIC) split with weekend with a win and a loss. The Wolves started with a 79-60 win over Mary followed by 62-82 defeat to Minot State.

NSU averaged 79.6 points per game shooting 47.9% from the field and 36.6% from behind the arc.

Senior Sam Masten leads the Wolves averaging 18.8 ppg and 7.6 rpg. Masten was named NSIC North Division Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 28.
