Beavers Close Spring Trip with 11-6 Victory Versus Valley City State

The Bemidji State University baseball team closed the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational and spring break trip with an 11-6 victory against Valley City State University, Sunday. The Beavers finished the eight-game trip with a 5-3 record.

The Beavers trailed 3-2 after four and a half innings, but put together a three-run fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Sophomore Logan Kalis (1B/RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) recorded a base knock with two out to plate two runners to give BSU the advantage. Valley City State got one back in the top of the sixth, but a four-run seventh inning for the Beavers handed them a comfortable 9-4 lead. The Vikings came back to a two-spot in the eighth, but BSU responded with a two-run inning of its own to make the scoreboard show 11-6 and that is where it would stay, handing the Beavers their third consecutive victory.

Kalis went 4-for-4 in the game, posing three RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Junior Mauricio Gomez (Caracas, Venezuela) went 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored. Senior Joe Chism (Great Bend, Kan.) was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run. Freshman left-hander Aaron Young (Urbandale, Iowa) recorded the win for the Beavers, pitching one and two-thirds innings of relief and allowing one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Ryan Van Someren (RHP, Milaca, Minn.) started for BSU and threw four and one-third innings, allowing three earned runs, walking one and fanning one batter.
 
Bemidji State now plays Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference-foe Wayne State College in a nonconference four-game set in Wayne, Neb. March 19-20. Both doubleheaders are slated for a 12 p.m. start.
