Mavericks Down Beavers in Nonconference Doubleheader

The Bemidji State University baseball team lost 10-5 and 5-0 against Minnesota State University, Mankato Monday in a nonconference doubleheader that closed the 2011 out-of-league schedule for BSU. The Beavers hung with MSU in both games, but big innings doomed BSU.

In game one the Beavers (6-8) led the Mavericks (7-4) 3-1 after two innings, but a six-run third for MSU gave it a 7-3 lead. The Mavericks added two in the sixth to make it 9-3, but the Beavers responded with a two-spot to make it 9-5. A single run in the seventh gave MSU a 10-5 lead and that is where it stood.

Sophomore Ryan Van Someren (RHP, Milaca, Minn.) took the loss for BSU throwing two and one third innings, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits. Senior right-hander Ryan Sander (St. James, Minn.) threw four and two thirds innings, giving-up three runs and four hits with five strikeouts. Freshman Dylan Webb (Phoenix, Ariz.) went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and an RBI. Junior Juan Molero (Maracaibo, Venezuela) was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

In game two the teams went scoreless through two innings, but MSU got single runs in the third and fourth to take a 2-0 lead. A three-run sixth, two unearned, capped the scoring in the game and the Mavericks won 5-0. The Beavers out-hit MSU in the game 5-3, but couldn’t string enough hits together to get runs.

Senior right-hander Ryan Gebur (New Prague, Minn.) had a solid performance for BSU, going all six innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits. The Beavers scattered their five hits among five players.

BSU begins Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play March 26-27 at Upper Iowa University with a four-game set.
