Womens Basketball Loses Twice

Friday versus Augustana

In its first home game of the year the Bemidji State University women’s basketball team posted a 92-44 loss against No. 13 Augustana College in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game Friday. The loss brings the Beavers record to 6-6 overall and 2-6 in the NSIC. Junior Kate Warmack (C, East Grand Forks, Minn.) led the team in scoring with a total of 16 points and eight rebounds.

BSU shot 24.6% from the field and 63.6% from the free throw line. The Beavers recorded 24 turnovers that led to 15 Viking points. Augustana was lights out from downtown in the first half, as it went 10-for-12 (83.3%). Overall from beyond the arc, the road team went 14-for-22 (63.6%).

The Beavers started out strong with a 3-point field goal from Morgan Lee (Jr., G, Hayward, Wis.) and kept up a 5-4 lead until two free throws from Augustana put them behind 6-5. That was the last lead BSU would take against the Vikings in the game.

With 13:38 left in the half junior Jessie Althoff (F, Becker, Minn.) made a two-point basket that put the score at 16-12. After almost two minutes without any scoring Augustana made a 3-pointer that put them 10 points ahead of BSU (23-13). With their comfortable double-digit lead the Vikings were then able to keep the Beavers away for the rest of the half.

With 9:17 left on the clock Warmack made a layup putting the Beavers only nine points behind with a score of 28-19. At the 4:19 mark Augustana took another 3-point field goal from the Beavers that put them ahead by 22 points. The field goal was answered by one from Lee. With 20 seconds left in the half a bucket from beyond the arc was made by Augie and the teams went into the locker rooms with 54-34 on the scoreboard.

At the beginning of the second half Augustana scores three points in the first 30 seconds. At 18:29 Lee misses a 3-point field goal that is rebounded by Augustana and quickly makes it into the hoop bringing the score 62-34. A foul by Augustana gives Warmack two free throw points to bring the score to 62-36. After two answered free throws from Augustana the Beavers run out of steam and end up 30 points behind (66-36) the Vikings. BSU never gets closer than 29 points with 14:33 left on the clock. A layup by Augustana finishes the game and puts the Beavers 48 points behind.

BSU was only able to muster 10 points in the second half and shot 8.6 percent from the field in the frame.

Lee went 3-for-9 from 3-point range and totaled 12 points. Junior guard Lanae Rash (Milwaukee, Wis.) totaled seven rebounds and two assists.

Saturday vs Wayne State

The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team fell 89-68 to No. 22 Wayne State College in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate contest Saturday bringing its record to 6-7 overall and 2-7 in the NSIC. Kate Warmack (Jr., C, East Grand Forks, Minn.) recorded her fourth double-double this season with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

The first half started off slow for both teams, as the Beavers weren’t able to get a basket until Allison McKee (So, G, New Brighton, Minn.) made a jumper with 17:20 left on the clock. The two-pointer tied the game 2-2 and was quickly answered by a layup from Wayne State. At 14:15 Warmack make a basket that put the Beavers within one point behind the Wildcats, 7-6. After almost three minutes and nine points from Wayne State, senior center Emily Kaus (Eagan, Minn.) make a layup that put BSU closer to their opponent 16-8. After another layup from Kaus, a jumper by Warmack and a bucket from Lanae Rash (Jr., G, Milwaukee, Wis.) the Beavers trailed 24-14 with 9:34 left in the half.

A foul on the Wildcats gave freshman guard Emily Reichert (Rogers, Minn.) two free throws, points that BSU desperately needed after almost three minutes without a basket, to bring the score to 31-16. With 2:31 left in the half Morgan Lee (Jr., G, Hayward, Wis.) made two points for BSU and a jumper by Althoff ended the first half with the Beavers trailing Wayne State 46-24.

The Beavers committed 18 turnovers in the first half that led to 15 Wildcat points. BSU shot 39.3 percent from the field, while WSC posted a 55.6 percentage from the field in the frame.

The second half started were the first had left off with a 3-point field goal by Wayne State and a missed jumper by Lee in the first 38 seconds. Two free throw shots by junior Ellie Wessling (G/F, Winsted, Minn.) and another layup from Kaus brought the score 57-29. With 7:29 left in the game the Beavers made a quick seven points in a little over a minute bringing the score to 79-53. As BSU slowly closed the gap Warmack made a layup that put BSU 24 points behind WSC, 59-83. Lee made her first and only 3-pointer with 44 seconds left in the game to end the contest 89-68.

Warmack posted 17 of her 23 points in the second half and shot 9-for-16 (56.3%) from the field in the game. Lee added 11 points, three assists and two steals. Kaus scored 10 points and brought down six rebounds.

BSU only committed four turnovers in the second half and won the final 20 minutes 44-43. The Beavers also found 18 offensive rebounds in the game and turned them into a 24-1 advantage in second chance points.
