Phil Brewer (F, So., Cambridge, Ontario) posted a goal and an assist and the Bemidji State University men ice hockey team built a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play, but No. 9 St. Cloud State University charged back with a pair of third period goals to push the game to overtime and an eventual tie.

Andrew Walsh (G, Jr., Dawson Creek, British Columbia) turned aside 44 shots in the stalemate, backstopping a penalty-kill unit that held the high-powered Huskies scoreless on five of six man advantage opportunities.

BSU was out shot 46-21 in the game.

The Beavers took their first lead of the series 16:28 into the game. Brewer collected a rebound from a Graeme McCormack (D, So., Thunder Bay, Ontario) shot, and deposited it over the shoulder of the SCSU goaltender Charlie Lindgren.

Midway through the second period, the BSU lead would grow to two when freshman Nate Arentz (F, Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) took a pass from Brewer and got behind the Huskies’ back line before beating Lindgren on a breakaway for the first point of his collegiate career.

With just over 12 seconds to play in the second, the Beavers were forced to take a timeout to regroup and change personnel. The Huskies responded with back-to-back hard-charging shots, but Walsh stood firm and sent SCSU into the locker room trailing 2-0.

The Beavers’ two-goal advantage wouldn’t last long.

Kevin Gravel netted his first goal of 2013-14 skating from end to end to beat Walsh glove side to cut the BSU lead to 2-1. Nic Dowd followed by making good on the Huskies’ sixth power-play opportunity of the night to tie the score with 11:14 to play.

Despite being outshout 43-20 through the first 60 minutes of play, Walsh and the Beavers push the game into overtime.

Due to a holding penalty on Tim Daly late in the third, BSU opened the extra session with 1:10 of PP time, but was unable to convert on their second man advantage opportunity of the evening.

After five minutes of overtime, the game officially ended in a 2-2 before BSU won a shootout exhibition.

The Beavers, 0-1-1, return to action Oct. 18-19 when they host the University of Minnesota for a pair nonconference contests. Friday’s series opening game is set for a 7:37 p.m. opening face off, while Saturday’s finale will get under way at 7:07 p.m. The series will serve as the Beavers’ 2013-14 home opener.
