Bemidji State seniors Tess Dusik and Allie Duellman scored to lead their team to a 2-2 tie with Ohio State Saturday at the OSU Rink in Columbus, Ohio.
Freshman goaltender Brittni Mowat stopped 50 shots through 65 minutes of hockey plus shut down three Buckeyes in shootout. Sophomore Whitney Wivoda scored the lone goal in the shootout for Bemidji State.
The Beavers took 5 of 6 points in WCHA play on the road.
The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team tied with Western Collegiate Hockey Association rival, The Ohio State University on Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink, 2-2. The Beavers went on to win the shootout to gain the extra point in the league standings.
After its victory last night, BSU tried to jump on OSU early and it did just that with the first goal of the game. Tess Dusik (F, Sr., Oak Bluff, Manitoba) scored her fourth goal of the season and second in as many games. Dusik continues to be a menace for the Buckeyes as she has scored seven career points including five goals against them.
The Buckeyes would answer back with a goal of their own about three minutes later. The goal opened a flurry of shots for OSU as it would outshoot BSU 15-7 in the first frame, but the Beavers were able to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Late in the first period, OSU committed a tripping call so the Beavers opened up the second frame with a man advantage and took advantage netting its third power-play goal in as many games. Allie Duellman (D, Sr., Maplewood, Minn.) netted her second goal of the season with just 17 seconds gone in the second frame.
Playing with the lead, the Beavers’ defense stood tough and did not allow OSU to score despite being outshot again 15-7. Bemidji State also killed off two Ohio State power plays in the period.
Midway through the final period, the Buckeyes tied the game 2-2. The Beavers and the Buckeyes then skated the rest of regulation without any scoring.
The score would remain locked at 2-2 through the five-minute overtime period setting up a shoot out.
Bemidji State won the shootout to get an extra point on the weekend.
Brittni Mowat (G, Fr., Glenboro, Manitoba) was fantastic in between the pipes for the Beavers as she had 50 saves. It was the first 50-save performance for a BSU goaltender since Zuzana Tomcikova did it Dec. 9, 2011 versus University of Wisconsin. She moves to 4-5-2 in her freshman season.
Bemidji State, now 4-6-2 overall and 1-4-1-1 in WCHA play, will return home next weekend as it takes on Minnesota State University, Mankato. The puck drops at 2:07 p.m. both Friday and Saturday from the Sanford Center.
