The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team earned a split with Minnesota State University, Mankato with a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon in Mankato, Minn. Bemidji State improves to 8-10-2 overall and 5-8-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

The two teams skated to a 0-0 tie in the first period. The Mavericks outshot the Beavers 11-7 in the period. MSU also held the advantage in the faceoff circle winning 11 of the 18 draws in the period. Both teams had one opportunity on the power play, but were turned away.

Neither team would blink in the second period, as the game would remain scoreless. BSU would have the shot advantage 15-12 in the period. The Beavers would also turn away the only power play opportunity in the period. The penalty killing unit did not allow a power play goal in eight chances in the series.

Bemidji State would finally break the tie at the 12:17 mark in the third period thanks to a goal by Kristine Grenier (F, Jr., St. Leon, Manitoba) for her fourth of the season. Madison Hutchinson (D, Fr., Manitou, Manitoba) and Stephanie Anderson (F, R-So., North St. Paul, Minn.) chipped in assists on Grenier’s goal.

Grenier’s goal proved to be the game-winner as the Beavers held on for a 1-0 victory. The victory fit a trend for BSU when it has had success. Bemidji State improves to 7-1-1 when scoring a power play goal and 5-0-1 when scoring first.

Brittni Mowat (G, Fr., Glenboro, Manitoba) notched her third shutout of the season and improves her record to 8-7-2. Mowat stopped all 33 Maverick shots en route to the victory.

Bemidji State (8-10-2 overall, 5-8-1 WCHA) will return home Jan. 10-11 to take on St. Cloud State University (3-16-3 overall, 2-12-1 WCHA). The series will be the first of the season between the two schools. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday from the Sanford Center.
