Despite trailing early, the Bemidji State University tennis team used strong singles play to earn a 5-4 non-conference victory over the College of St. Benedict Sunday to move to 2-0 on the season.

Following a 8-1 victory over Concordia College in the morning match, Bemidji State drew St. Ben’s in the matinee. The Beavers fell in the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches to trail 2-1 heading into singles play, but took the lead, when Morgan Opp earned a straight-sets win at No. 1 (6-0, 6-2) and Brooke Mimmack was a winner in the No. 6 slot (6-1, 6-2). Ariadna Lopez was a 6-1, 7-5 winner at No. 3 singles and newcomer Hannah Alme clinched the victory with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 tie-break win in the No. 5 match.

Bemidji State finished the day with a 5-4 win to move to 2-0 on the season.

The Beavers have a tripleheader on the horizon, Feb. 11-12. BSU will open play Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. match at Winona State University. Sunday the Beavers will attempt to avenge a NSIC Tournament loss to Upper Iowa University at 9 a.m. on a neutral court in Winona, Minn. before battling Hamline University in a non-conference match up in Lakeville, Minn. at 3 p.m.
