The Bemidji State University tennis team earned a 8-1 victory over the University of Mary Saturday, before losing a tight, 5-4 match to Minnesota State University-Moorhead Sunday. Saturday’s victory stretched BSU’s wining streak to six matches and moved the Beavers to 11-4 on the season to match a program record for wins.

Although Ariadna Lopez-Simo and Hannah Alme needed a tie breaker to earn a win in the No. 2 position (9-7 (7-3)), BSU rolled through doubles play Saturday, taking a 3-0 lead into singles action. BSU’s lead swelled to 5-0 after Brooke Mimmack and Claudia Bellew posted straight-sets victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches, respectively. After the Beavers dropped the No. 4 singles match, BSU bounced back to take the top three matches, including a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles by Zoe Lindgren, and earn the 8-1 win.

Bemidji State opened Sunday’s match with wins at No. 1 doubles (8-0) by Morgan opp and Lindgren and No. 2 doubles (8-6) by Lopez-Simo and Alme to head into singles play with a 2-1 lead. After Alme lost her No. 4 singles match (6-2, 6-3), Mimmak took her match 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 6 slot to ragian a 3-2 lead. Despite taking the first set 6-3, Breann Walsh dropped her No. 5 singles match in a tie breaker (6-2 (10-1)) and the Beavers and Dragons went inot the final three matches tied 3-3. Lopez-Simo earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, but the Beavers dropped the top two singles match ups, including a 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) No. 1 singles match by Opp.

Sunday’s loss was the first suffered by BSU since Feb. 25 when it fell to Augustana University, 9-0, and ended BSU’s longest winning streak of the season.

The Beavers are back on the road April 8-9 when they travel to Grand Forks, N.D. for a pair of neutral-site conference matches. BSU opens the weekend with a 3 p.m. match up with Southwest Minnesota State University Saturday and will wrap the weekend of competition and the regular season up with an 8 a.m. match versus Minnesota State University, Mankato Sunday.
