The Bemidji State University tennis team used a 9-0 sweep of Southwest Minnesota State University Sunday to wrap up the regular season and establish a program record for wins in a season. The Beavers’ sixth Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory of 2017 also stood as the team’s 12, surpassing its 11-win 2016 season.

Bemidji State opened the match gaining three points in doubles play. The pair of Sabrina Okeson and Breann Walsh earned an 8-2 win in the No. 3 slot to start the sweep. BSU’s No. 2 doubles team of Ariadna Lopez-Simo and Hannah Alme took their match 8-1 and Zoe Lindgren and Morgan Opp followed with an 8-6 win at No. 1 to send BSU into singles action holding a 3-0 lead.

BSU’s dominance continued on the singles courts. Alme scored a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles spot to open a string of five straight-sets wins for the Beavers. Brooke Mimmack bounced back from her first loss of 2017 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6, Walsh posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5, Lopez-Simo earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 and Lindgren swept her No. 2 singles match, 6-0, 6-0. Opp wrapped up the match needing a superset tiebreaker to complete a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 victory.

The Beavers, now 12-5 overall and 6-5 in NSIC play have earned the No. 6 seed in the NSIC Tournament and will open play versus the No. 3 seed Winona State University at 11:30 a.m. April 22. The winner will advance to face the winner of the No. 3 Upper Iowa University/No. 7 St. Cloud State University match at 8 a.m. April 23 with the championship set for 12 p.m. that afternoon.
