Beaver Fever Friday – Erica Gartner– Womens Basketball

The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team finishes back-to-back home games to begin the season with a tilt Saturday, Nov. 18, against Mayville State University. The Beavers (0-1) and Comets (4-1) begin at 4 p.m. from BSU Gymnasium.

Fast Break Bemidji State
The Beavers hold a commanding lead in the all-time series record, 32-5, and have won 11 straight against the Comets dating back to Dec. 16, 2007. BSU head coach Chelsea DeVille has faced Mayville State each of her two seasons with the Beavers while winning by a margin of 23.5 points per game. Sophomore center Sydney Arrington broke out against Mayville State last season, scoring a career-high 29 points in her first game as a Beaver. Arrington shot 13-of-17 from the field and brought in six rebounds. Senior center Sierra Senske also scored double-digit points against MSU, finishing the night with 11 on 4-of-8 shooting.

Bemidji State was beat by Valley City State University, 80-76, in its home-opener Saturday, Nov. 11. The Vikings outscored the Beavers in each of the first three quarters, and held a 38-33 lead at halftime despite a 50 percent shooting effort from the Beavers. Freshman guard Brooklyn Bachmann became the second Beaver in as many years to score over 20 points in her BSU debut after finishing with 22 against VCSU. She led all Beavers on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and also led with six rebounds. Sophomore guard Erica Gartner followed with 18 points on 6-of-17 shooting and Senske scored 14 on 6-of-10 shooting.

Scouting Mayville State
Mayville State has played five games prior to Saturday’s matchup against Bemidji State. The Comets enter the weekend 4-1 overall, taking their first loss of the season Saturday, Nov. 11 against Concordia University (Neb.), 93-58. MSU fell into a large deficit after the first two quarters as CU took a 63-28 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs also outscored the Comets in the third quarter before Mayville State made a slight push in the fourth.

Senior forward Andi Gayner and sophomore guard Naomi Torgerson led the Comets in scoring with 10 points each. Gayner also led the team with five assists in 28 minutes played. Torgerson was one of two Comets with a team-high six rebounds and she also led the team with four steals.

Gayner leads the Comets in scoring on the season with 16.8 points per game on 41.9 percent shooting from the field. Torgerson and sophomore center Andrea Skillingstad each lead the team with 5.8 rebounds per game. Torgerson also leads the team with 4.0 assists and 3.7 steals per game.
