Sophomore guard McKayla Scheuer recorded a career-high nine points during a 16-3 run to end Friday night’s Bemidji State University women’s basketball game against No. 14 Northern State University, but a large first-half lead allowed NSU to take the win, 65-55. The Beavers (2-5, 1-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) were led in scoring by freshman guard Brooklyn Bachmann with 13 points who missed out on a double-double by one rebound.
The tough rebounding Wolves continued their reputation by nabbing five of the first eight rebounds, including two offensive, to go up 5-0 in the first 2:21 of the game. Senior guard Mikayla Larson put the Beavers on the board with a layup at the 6:18 mark, scoring her first points off her own defensive rebound on the other end. After senior center Sierra Senske brought the game back to a three-point spread, Northern State went on a 8-3 run to finish the half and enter the second period with a 15-7 lead.
Bemidji State was put in a double-digit deficit on the first basket of the second quarter by Northern State, 18-7. The Wolves went on the score eight of the first 11 points of the quarter and grabbed seven of 10 rebounds in the final 3:49 of the half. The final push allowed the Wolves to hold the Beavers to just one point while scoring 13 to enter halftime with a 38-16 lead. NSU led BSU on the boards, 28-18, including an 8-3 advantage on the offensive end.
The Beavers stayed right with the Wolves after the halftime break, as both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter. Bemidji State earned nine of its 13 points in the third period from 3-pointers, including two from freshman guard Brooklyn Bachmann for her first points of the game.
BSU’s 51-29 deficit after the third quarter was too much to overcome in the fourth period, despite a 16-3 run by the Beavers to end the game. Bachmann and sophomore guard Mikayla Scheuer hit back-to-back 3-pointers to begin the run, while Scheuer hit another pair of back-to-back 3-pointers to give herself a new career high with nine points.
Bachmann led all Beavers with 13 points and missed out on a double-double by one rebound, which also led the team. Scheuer followed in scoring with nine points while freshman guard Maria Appicelli chipped in eight.
The Wolves outshot the Beavers from the field, 40.3-29.3 percent, while BSU converted from long range, 32.3-16.7 percent, over NSU. Northern State went on to win the rebound margin, 47-38, including 16-11 on the offensive end. Both the Beavers and Wolves converted their offensive rebounds for nine points apiece.
Bemidji State closes out its NSIC weekend Saturday with a trip to Moorhead, Minn., to face Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Beavers and Dragons tip off at 4 p.m. from Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
