Sophomore center Sydney Arrington came one point and one rebound shy of a double-double Sunday afternoon as the Bemidji State University women’s basketball fell to Winona State University, 47-33, at BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers (4-7, 3-4 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) were held to 10 second-half points and tied the Warriors (11-1, 7-1 NSIC) coming out of the halftime break.
Freshman guard Brooklyn Bachmann continued her scoring streak from a night ago to help Bemidji State grab its first and only lead of the first half early in the first quarter against Winona State. She put in the first five points for the Beavers on two layups, including an and-one opportunity, off assists by sophomore guard Erica Gartner and sophomore center Sydney Arrington. The Warriors put in the next score two minutes later to take their final lead of the first half. Despite BSU holding WSU to 5-of-14 shooting after the final six minutes of the first quarter, the Warriors took a 16-9 lead into the second quarter.
Arrington scored all seven of her first half points in the second quarter to help bring Bemidji State to within one point of Winona State late in the half. All seven points by Arrington were the final scores for the Beavers in the half with the seventh point coming off an and-one conversion. Her final point of the half brought BSU within one point, 24-23, with just over two minutes remaining in the half. Following a free throw by the Warriors, neither team scored over the final two minutes of action to give WSU a 25-23 lead at the half.
Gartner scored the game-tying basket out of the halftime break for the game’s first tie since 7:55 in the first quarter. The Warriors answered with a 3-pointer that gave them the final lead of the day. Bemidji State allowed Winona State to go on a 13-0 run while the Beavers scored six points in the quarter, including four in the final minute of the third. Winona State extended its lead to a game-high 18 points near the end of the game, while Bemidji State held WSU scoreless over the final 2:33 of play.
Arrington led BSU with nine points and nine rebounds while senior forward Sam Adamich pulled down eight rebounds. Bemidji State shot 25 percent from the floor as a team and went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Winona State shot 31 percent from the field and 36 percent from beyond the arc while both teams pulled down 42 rebounds.
Bemidji State will prepare to travel for the first leg of a five-game road trip next weekend while facing St. Cloud State University and University of Minnesota Duluth in the final games of the season-series versus each program. The Beavers and Huskies open the weekend at 6 p.m. Jan. 5 in St. Cloud, Minn., while the Beavers aim for a season sweep of the Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Jan. 6 in Duluth, Minn.
