Beaver Women’s Hockey Gameday – Game 12 – November 10, 2018 – vs Ohio State

Sophomore goaltender Kerigan Dowhy made a career-high 38 saves to stymie No. 4 Ohio State University, 2-1, and earn the Bemidji State University women’s hockey its first win of the 2018-19 season. Sophomore Clair DeGeorge scored the game-winning goal with just 48 seconds left in the second period to propel the Beavers (1-9-1, 1-5-1-0 WCHA) to the upset win over the fourth-ranked Buckeyes (9-4-0, 5-2-0-0 WCHA).

It was another sophomore who opened the scoring for the Beavers in Lindsey Featherstone. Featherstone scored her second goal of the year to put Bemidji State up 1-0 at 8:35 of the opening period and was assisted by freshman Graysen Myers and sophomore Lydia Passolt. BSU would take the one-goal lead into the second period and went up 2-0 when DeGeorge snuck a rebounded Emily Bergland shot past freshman goaltender Andrea Braendli for her team leading fourth goal of the season.

With the two-goal lead and just 20 minutes remaining, the Beavers focused on defense and made sure to dump the puck in deep in the Buckeyes’ zone to maintain the lead. The Buckeyes were granted a power play 5:21 into the third period and the high-powered Buckeyes offense capitalized just seven seconds later when Emma Maltais fired one past Dowhy from the top of the right circle to break up the shutout. Dowhy and the Beavers’ defense didn’t falter then one and held the Buckeyes off the scoresheet for the remainder of the game and earned their first win of the 2018-19 season.

The Beavers were heavily outshot in the game 39-23 by the Buckeyes but Dowhy was the difference maker as she stopped 38-of-39 shots including 13-of-14 in the third period. Bemidji State had one chance on the power play but came up empty while the Buckeyes scored on one of their three chances.

Dowhy earned her first win in the crease and improves to 1-4-0 on the season while Ohio State’s Andrea Breandli falls to 6-4-0 after stopping 22-of-24 shots.

The Beavers and Buckeyes return to action tomorrow afternoon for the series finale. Puck drop for game two is scheduled for 3:07 p.m. at Sanford Center. Tune in to our broadcast 37 minutes before the face-off for our pregame show on KPMI AM 1300 The Legends.
