Senior Haley Mack broke the program’s career short-handed goal record, senior Lauren Bench recorded a 26-save shutout for fourth of the season and recorded her first career assist and head coach Jim Scanlan earned his 99th career victory after the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team earned a 3-0 victory over St. Cloud State University Friday night.
The Beavers (15-15-3, 9-12-2-0 WCHA) earned three points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings and will be the fifth seed in the WCHA playoffs. The Beavers will either travel to University of Minnesota Duluth or Ohio State University who are separated by just one point in the standings.
Bemidji State and the Huskies (5-21-4, 1-19-1-0 WCHA) were each held scoreless during the first period and much of the second but with just 2:19 left in the middle frame, senior Abby Halluska broke the scoring drought with her seventh goal of the season while junior Clair DeGeorge earned her team-leading 14th assist of the season and Bench earned her first career assist.
The Beavers extended their lead to 2-0 early in the third period when senior Jacqueline Kaasa tipped in a Graysen Myers shot for her fifth goal of the season and Myers’ first point of the season. St. Cloud State pulled goaltender Emma Polusny with 2:58 remaining and SCSU earned a power play with 1:21 left for the 6-on-4 advantage but Mack was able to win the puck and skate into the Beavers zone to bury her team-leading 14th goal of the season and fifth career short-handed goal for the most in program history.
Bench improved to 12-13-2 on the season with the 26-save shutout, the 10th of her career.
