Beavers ready for 2021 NSIC Outdoor Championships May 13-15

The finale of the Bemidji State University track & field team schedule is May 13-15 with the 2021 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by the University of Minnesota Duluth at James S. Malosky Stadium. The championship begins Thursday at 12 p.m. with the heptathlon followed by start times of 9 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Sunday.

A duo of event winners and 17 point-scorers led Bemidji State to a third-place finish at the Maverick Classic on Friday, May 7 in Mankato Minn. Junior Ryne Prigge broke the 800-meter run program record previously set in 2012 while junior Coley Rezabek set the third-best javelin mark in BSU history.

BSU’s 17 top-eight finishers and point-scorers recorded 100 points to finish behind Minnesota State University, Mankato (190) in first place and Augustana University (104) in second. BSU finished ahead of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foes Winona State University in fourth, St. Cloud State University in fifth and Concordia University-St. Paul in sixth.

Prigge took first in the 800m run with a new BSU record time of 2:14.68, breaking the previous mark of 2:15.57 set by Michelle Ohman in 2012.

Rezabek earned her win in the javelin with a throw of 40.15m (131-08.75), becoming one of 10 BSU top 10 outdoor marks set on the day. Freshman Emily Curtice followed Rezabek in second with a throw of 36.99m (121-04.25).

Junior thrower Zoe Carrasco once again hit the national provisional qualifying marks in both the shot put and hammer throw. She took third in the shot put with a season-best 14.33m (47-00.25), a mark that ranks ninth-best in program history. Carrasco also finished fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.22m (174-07). Her hammer throw ranks third-best in program history, behind her previous throws this season.

Senior Analise Fabre took second place in the triple jump with a leap of 11.27m (36-11.75) while junior Reygan Brown finished third with a mark of 11.22m (36-09.75). Fabre’s personal record top’s her previous as the fifth-best mark in program history. Brown moved up to seventh all-time in the event at BSU.

Senior Libby Christenson earned second in the high jump with a personal record of 1.63m (5-04.25).

Freshman distance runner Carol Miller ran the third-fastest 3000m steeplechase in program history with her second-place time of 11:52.15. Her race is the fastest for BSU since Christa Pribula in 2005. Fellow freshman Zoey Mills joined the top 10 marks in the 1500m run with a time of 4:51.63, taking 18th in the event at the Maverick Classic. Her time comes in fourth all-time, just ahead of fellow mid-distance runner Ryne Prigge in 2019.

Freshman sprinter and jumper Alaina Hall finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5.41m (17-09) while junior Aneesa Tucker took seventh in the event with a mark of 5.38m (17-08). Both distances rank fourth and fifth in BSU outdoor history and the furthest jumps since M’Kelle Tomberlin in 2008.

In total, Bemidji State saw 12 personal records set on the day.

Christenson ranks third in the NSIC in the heptathlon this season with a score of 4,050 points set at the St. John’s Invitational on April 17. She also ranks seventh in the league with her high jump mark of 1.63m set at the Maverick Classic. Also in the heptathlon, Tucker ranks sixth with 3,968 points set at the St. John’s Invitational

The javelin duo of Rezabek and Curtice rank third and fourth in the conference after career days at the Ron Masanz Classic on April 30. In her first meet of the season, Rezabek threw a personal record 40.76m (133-9) while Curtice also threw a personal record 39.81m (130-7).

Prigge’s record-breaking time in the 800m ranks fourth in the NSIC heading into the outdoor conference championships.

Carrasco enters the meet fifth in the conference (10th in NCAA Central Region) in the shot put with a throw of 14.33m set at the Maverick Classic and sixth (12th NCAA Central Region) in the hammer throw with a BSU record mark of 55.28m (181-04) set at the Holst Invitational on April 17. Sophomore Tierra Doss ranks seventh in the shot put with a personal record 13.40m (43-11.75) at the Cougar Invite.
