Down 2-1 at the start of the third period, the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team scored three goals in the final frame to earn a 4-3 victory at St. Cloud State University Friday afternoon in game one of their series. The Beavers have now won three consecutive games and improve to 5-8-2 (2-8-1 WCHA) on the season.
Four different Beavers scored for the Beavers in the game including freshman Claire Vekich who scored the eventual game-winning goal with 2:41 to play.
St. Cloud State opened the scoring 11:27 into the first period when Taylor Lind scored for the Huskies. Bemidji State responded before the period’s end when freshman Alyssa Watkins won an offensive faceoff and fifth-year senior Lydia Passolt beat goaltender Emma Polusny with just 1:31 left in the frame. For Passolt it was her first goal in her first game since returning to the ice from injury and last played on Oct. 30.
However, just 44 seconds into the second period, Olivia Cvar retook the one-goal lead for the Huskies. The second period would end with the Beavers down one but 6:51 into the third period, Watkins would skate past the Huskies’ defense to score her first collegiate goal and tie the game at two.
After a flurry of saves by sophomore goaltender Hannah Hogenson with less than five minutes to play, junior Reece Hunt changed momentum when she scored the go-ahead goal with 3:12 to play. Hogenson earned the secondary assist on the goal and becomes the first BSU goaltender since Kerigan Dowhy (Nov. 10, 2018) to record an assist. Bemidji State wouldn’t stop there and just 31 seconds later, Vekich scored her third goal of the season to put the Beavers up 4-2. BSU would need the fourth goal as Lind would net her second of the game just 33 seconds later while Polusny was pulled for the extra attacker.
Hogenson and the Beavers defense would hold off the Huskies for the remaining 2:08 to earn the 4-3 victory and their third consecutive win.
Bemidji State was out-shot in the game 34-29 while Hogenson improved to 4-5-2 on the season after stopping 31-of-34 shots. Polusny falls 2-4-1 on the season and made 25 saves in the game.
The Beavers only earned one power play during the game and came up empty on their chance while their penalty kill denied the Huskies on all three of their chances.
Bemidji State will play for its second-consecutive series sweep tomorrow afternoon when the two teams meet again at 2:01 p.m.

Kari Beebe – Hey Kelly!
Kari Beebe from Oakdale, Paige Beebe’s aunt. Good to hear your voice as usual. Sounds kinda rough up there! Good luck Beavers! Get the sweep!
