Bemidji State travels to No. 10 Clarkson for non-conference series
The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team hits the road for its first road trip of the season and will travel 1,126 miles west to Potsdam, N.Y., to face No. 10 Clarkson University. The Beavers (2-0-0) and Golden Knights (2-0-0) clash for a non-conference series beginning Friday, Sept. 30 and ending Saturday. Puck drop for game one is slated for 5 p.m., CDT followed by 1 p.m., CDT for game two.
Bemidji State travels to New York after opening its 2022-23 season with a series sweep over Lindenwood University at Sanford Center. The Beavers opened their series against the Lions with a 3-2 overtime victory in game two and then followed with a 6-3 win in game two.
Junior Taylor Nelson scored the game-winning goal 1:28 into the overtime period in game one for her first career game-winning goal.
Junior goaltender Hannah Hogenson collected the win between the pipes for her first of the season and ninth of her career. She finished the game by stopping 25-of-27 shots from the Lions.
BSU then exploded for six goals in game two including going 3-for-3 on the power play for the first time since 2016.
Sophomore Adriana Van De Leest assisted on four of those goals and tied a program record for most assists in a game by a defenseman.
Freshman Raeley Carney netted her first two collegiate goals in the win with both coming on the power play.
A total of 11 Beavers recorded a point in the game highlighted by Van De Leest’s four assists while Carney (2g), Smith (1g-1a) and freshman Mya Headrick (2a) each had multiple points.
Sophomore goaltender Abbie Thompson made her first career start in net for the Beavers and earned her first career win after she stopped 13-of-16 shots from the Lions.
For her efforts, freshman Raeley Carney was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week for her first career WCHA weekly accolade.
Van De Leest led the Beavers with four points over the weekend while Carney and Nelson each scored two goals to lead the team.
Gabbie Smith follows Van De Leest with three points (1g-2a) while Carney, Nelson, Calli Forsberg (1g-1a), Shebly Breiland (2a), Kendra Fortin (2a) and Mya Headrick (2a) each totaled two points.
Bemidji State finished the opening weekend by going 3-for-5 while on the power play and its penalty kill turned aside all three opportunities for the Lions.
Bemidji State is 1-4-1 all-time against Clarkson but went 1-0-1 in its last meeting last season in Bemidji.
The Beavers and Golden Knights played to a 1-1 overtime tie in their first game of last season’s series and then followed with a 2-1 victory in game two.
Sophomore goaltender Hannah Hogenson was dominant between the pipes for the Beavers in the series and turned aside 52-of-54 shots for a 0.96 goals against average and .963 save percentage.
Junior Gabbie Smith is the lone active skater to have scored against Clarkson while Taylor Nelson (2), Makenna Deering (1a) and Paige Anderson (1a) have all recorded assists.
Head Coach Jim Scanlan is 1-4-1 coaching against the Golden Knights and is 114-139-20 in his nine-year career.
Bemidji State named senior Kate Boland its captain for the 2022-23 season voted by her peers while Paige Anderson and Reece Hunt were voted alternate captains.
Four newcomers are welcomed to the Beaver squad this year including four freshmen and one transfer student. Raeley Carney (Wasilla, Alaska), McKayla Zilisch (Appleton, Wis.), Mya Headrick (Garden River, Ont.) and Madison Faucher (Amherstburg, Ont.) are all incoming freshmen this season while Genevieve “Geno” Hendrickson (Warroad, Minn.) joins the Beavers after spending her freshman season at Franklin Pierce University.
