Bemidji State University head baseball coach Tim Bellew was honored by his peers Tuesday, when the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced its annual awards and named the eighth-year skipper the 2013 NSIC Coach of the Year. Five other Beavers were honored, which included All-NSIC First Team laurels to seniors Lewis Baumann (SS, Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Logan Kalis (1B/RHP/OF, Little Falls, Minn.).

Named All-NSIC Second Team was junior Zach Braun (C/1B, Lakeville, Minn.) and senior outfielder Trevor Purvis (Rio Rancho, N.M.). For the first time since a Gold Glove team was announced in 2010, the Beavers have a Gold Glove Team member in sophomore Jack Hegarty (INF, Brainerd, Minn.).

The four all-conference team members marks the first time since 2004, BSU had more than three student-athletes named to the all-conference team. With the additions of Bellew and Hegarty, it is the most awards Bemidji State has racked-up since 1997.

Bellew guided the Beavers to a 22-20 overall and 13-13 NSIC record in 2013. The league mark was good enough to send BSU to the NSIC Tournament for the first time since 2008 and the second time in the eight-year head coach’s career at Bemidji State. The 20 overall wins marked the seventh time in program history (62 seasons) the team reached the plateau and, in the process, became the second team to ever post back-to-back 20-win seasons. In 2013, the Beavers finished first in the NSIC in batting average (.330), second in fielding percentage (.970) and fifth in team ERA (4.15).

Bellew becomes the second Bemidji State skipper to earn the NSIC Coach of the Year award, as Jim Grimm was named to the honor in 1997 and 2002. Bellew is third all-time at BSU in wins with 131. He came to Bemidji State in 2005 after guiding the Kansas Wesleyan University baseball program for 11 seasons as its head coach.

Baumann earned his first career all-conference honor at shortstop after he finished the regular season third in the league in batting average with a .397 mark after sitting above .400 for most the season. He ranked fourth in slugging percentage (.649), fifth in total bases (85), tied for seventh in doubles (14), tied for 10th in hits (52) and tied for 11th in RBIs (33) and home runs (5). He fielded 22 double plays to finish tied for fourth in the league, while his 99 assists finished seventh.

During the team’s spring break trip, March 13-17, Baumann batted .583 (14-for-24), recorded seven extra base hits, which included four doubles, two home runs and a triple, totaled 26 bases and posted a 1.083 slugging percentage to earn NSIC Player of the Week and NCBWA Central Region Player of the Week honors.

Earlier this season, he was named Capital One All-Academic All-District 7 College Division First-Team for his efforts in the classroom.

Kalis was named as the first team designated hitter for the second consecutive season after he went .364 at the plate to finish 16th in the NSIC. Kalis placed his name up and down league charts as he finished fourth in total bases (86), tied for fourth in hits (55), fifth in total plate appearances (178), tied for 10th in walks (18), tied for 11th in doubles (12) and home runs (5), 12th in slugging percentage (.570), 14th in on-base percentage (.446) and tied for 14th in RBIs (32).

Kalis was an all-conference designated hitter, but also succeeded on the mound, as he led the team with a 1.53 ERA. The senior posted a 4-2 record in 10 appearances (three starts) and in 35.1 innings pitched fanned 37 batters.

Purvis was awarded his first all-conference honor in his second season with Bemidji State. The outfielder posted a .375 batting average to finish 13th in the NSIC. His on-base percentage of .456 led the team and finished seventh. At the end of the season he was tied for seventh in walks (20), eighth in hits (54), tied for eighth in plate appearances (172), tied for 14th in doubles (11) and tied for 15th in total bases with (73).

Braun, a 2012 All-NSIC First Team catcher, was named to the second team after his 15 doubles finished tied for fourth in the league. He tied for 15th with 73 total bases and 16th in hits with 50. Braun hit .352 at the plate with 25 runs and 22 RBIs. The junior’s .988 fielding percentage was good for 19th in the league. He was placed behind the dish, at first base and in the outfield in 2013 and totaled 155 putouts with four assists and just two errors.

Hegarty is in his first season as a Beaver after transferring from Centry College He played in 28 games with 27 starts at both second base and shortstop. The sophomore fielded 19 double plays to finish 11th in the NSIC. He totaled 82 assists and 52 putouts with just two errors to finish with a .985 fielding percentage.

The Beavers will battle St. Cloud State University May 8 in the first round of the NSIC Tournament at 11 a.m. at Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. The Beavers earned the No. 8 seed in the NSIC Tournament after finishing with a 13-13 league record and will be facing the No. 1 seed Huskies, who won the NSIC Regular Season Championship with a 19-3 conference mark.
