BSU Women’s Hockey Splits With #2 Minnesota

The Bemidji State women’s hockey team may have lost 4-1 on Friday night to the #2 Minnesota Gophers, but they bounced back with an exciting 2-1 win Saturday in front of a crowd of 587 fans at “Pink In The Rink” night at the Sanford Center.

BSU became only the second team this season to defeat the Gophers and the only team this year to shut them out through two consecutive periods.

The Beavers got fantastic goaltending from Zuzana Tomcikova who stopped 46 shots in the loss and turned away 41 of 42 shots on net in the win.

On Friday night, the Beavers struck first. Sadie Lundquist sent one past the Gophers Noora Raty, but Minnesota would go ahead 2-1 at the end of the first period. The Gophers would score two more goals in the third period including an empty net goal to win 4-1.

Saturday’s game saw freshman Rachael Kelly scoring the first goal in the second period and Lundquist adding to the Beavers tally nine minutes later. Bemidji State would lead 2-0 going into the third period. Lundquist leads the Beavers in scoring with 6 goals and 10 assists for 16 points this season.

The Gophers scored late in the hockey game to pull within a goal, but BSU would hang on for the 2-1 win.

Saturday night’s win was only the second time in school history Bemidji State women’s hockey has defeated the Gophers in Bemidji.

Bemidji State improves their record to 3-2-1 in WCHA play and 6-2-2 overall this season.
