The Bemidji State women’s hockey team once again met their match against the Ohio State Buckeyes Friday night.
The Beavers found themselves behind by two goals in the first period before freshman winger Natasha Kostenko put one past OSU’s Lisa Steffes. The Buckeyes would lead 3-1 going into the second period.
In the third, the Buckeye’s all-time leading scorer Natalie Spooner would break free of the Beaver powerplay unit and score a shorthanded goal to take a 4-1 lead.
Down by three goals, most teams would struggle to comeback, but not the Beavers. Bemidji State’s Emily Erickson would score her 11th goal of the season to put the Beavers within two goals with just under five minutes to play. BSU’s Mackenzie Thurston would add to the scoreboard with her first goal of the season to pull the Beavers within a goal with 2:53 left in the hockey game.
With OSU up 4-3 and the clock winding down, Bemidji State would pull goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova for the extra attacker, but Spooner would strike again with an empty netter and give the Buckeye’s 5-3 win.
The Beavers haven’t had much luck on Friday’s or first games of series this season. Their record in game one’s is 3-7-2. However, BSU has a record of 9-2-0 in second games and is 6-1-0 after suffering a loss.
The Beavers and Buckeyes wrap up their four-game regular season series tonight at 7:07pm at the Sanford Center in Bemidji.
