The Bemidji State University baseball team used a three-run sixth inning in game one to earn a 4-2 victory and a seven-run fourth in game two to gain a 12-11 win to sweep Concordia University, St. Paul in its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener Saturday in St. Paul, Minn.The Beavers (9-7, 2-0 NSIC) trailed 2-0 after two innings, but a single run in the fifth and three in the top of the sixth guided BSU to the game one victory. The Beavers tallied all three runs in the sixth with two outs and two were recorded as unearned. Junior Jaryd Marks (RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) knotted the game 2-2 with a double down the right field line that scored junior Trevor Purvis (OF/P, Rio Rancho, N.M.), then a miscue by CU’s third baseman kept the inning alive and BSU tacked on what would be the winning runs.

Junior left-hander Phil Bray (Chatfield, Minn.) was BSU’s starter and closer in game one. After allowing two runs on five hits in the first two frames then the lefty shut-down the Golden Bear offense and gave-up just two more hits the rest of the way. He went seven strong for his fourth win of the season to improve to 4-1 overall. He fanned five batters, while walking three.

The Beavers found themselves in an 8-3 hole entering the fourth inning of game two, but posted a seven spot in the frame to open a 10-3 lead. BSU went yard twice in the inning, making up two of the seven hits the road team totaled. Senior outfielder Juan Molero (Maracaibo, Venezuela) started the Beavers off with a solo shot as the first batter of the inning, then Marks put the ball over the right center field fence for a three RBI shot.

BSU tacked on a single runs in the fifth and eighth inning to take the 12-8 advantage. Turns out junior Matt Ellinghuysen’s (3B/C, Saint Charles, Minn.) double down the left field line that scored pinch-running sophomore Chad Hanson (OF, St. Paul, Minn.) – who ran for junior Logan Kalis (RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) after he drew a two out walk – from second was the winning run, as CU scored three in the bottom of the eighth to cut the BSU lead to just one at 12-11 entering the decisive ninth inning.

Junior Ryan Anderson (RHP, Lino Lakes, Minn.) threw the final sixth and one third inning, including the ninth where he sat down the Golden Bears in order. He picked-up his first decision of the season in the win, allowing three earned runs on six hits with three K’s. Seven BSU batters posted a multi-hit game to contribute to the Beavers’ 16 total hits. Molero had three hits in the game and two in game one to provide key at bats for the Beavers. Sophomore Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) also recorded a home run in the game and guided BSU with five RBIs.

BSU continues its four-game series with CU tomorrow at 12 p.m.
