The Bemidji State Athletic Department hosted its annual Awards Banquet tonight at the BSU Gym. Since the BSU Baseball team finished its season last spring AFTER the 2013 banquet, their players were eligible for the Athlete of the Year honors.
On the women’s side, a fifth year senior, who played two sports at BSU, took the top honor.
Logan Kalis of the BSU Baseball team won the Male AOTY Award. Tiffany VanHaaften won the Female AOTY Award.

Tiffany VanHaaften – Soccer (Senior, Midfield, Chaska, Minn.)
A 2013-14 recipient of the prestigious NSIC/Myles Brand Academic with Distinction award, VanHaaften was a force in the midfield for the Beavers’ soccer program both offensively and defensively over the course of the last four seasons. Since 2009, VanHaaften has logged 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points in 69 games played and 62 starts. A defensive-minded midfielder, VanHaaften also contributed to 27 shutouts by the Beavers. The Chaska, Minn. native left the program tied for fifth all-time with five career game-winning goals. As a senior in 2013, VanHaaften was fifth on the team with 10 points, included a career-high four goals and a team-leading three game-winning goals. VanHaaften is a three-time Academic All-NSIC selection and a two-time College Division Capitol One/CoSIDA Academic All-District pick and earned a spot on the 2013 NSCAA All-Central Region Second Team.
Logan Kalis – Baseball (Senior, 1B/RHP/OF, Little Falls, Minn.)
Kalis capped his Bemidji State baseball career in 2013 as Third Team Daktronics NCAA Division II Baseball All-American. The All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference First Team and Daktronics All-Central Region First Team in 2012 and 2013, he went .364 at the plate to finish 16th in the NSIC during the regular season. After helping the Beavers to the NSIC Tournament Championship, Kalis concluded his senior season with a .333 batting average, .515 slugging percentage and .418 on-base percentage. He totaled 57 hits, 34 RBIs and 28 runs scored., Kalis made 11 appearances on the mound and led the team with a 1.66 ERA. The right-hander posted a 4-3 record in four starts and in 43.1 innings pitched, he fanned 42 batters. Kalis allowed eight earned runs (13 total), walked six and allowed a .220 opposing batting average.
The two newcomers of the year went to Brittni Mowat of the Womens Hockey team and Brock Lutes of the Mens Basketball team. Mowat won 10 games in 33 starts as a freshman. Brock Lutes was a second team All-Region pick, and was named as the NSIC Newcomer of the Year too.

Brittni Mowat – Women’s Hockey (Freshman, Goaltender, Glenboro, Manitoba)
A 2013-14 WCHA All-Rookie team selection, Mowat was stellar between the pipes for Bemidji State as she broke multiple program records for freshman goaltenders including wins (10), games played (33), minutes (1888:34), goals against average (2.45) and save percentage (.918). Just the fourth Beaver land a spot on the all-rookie squad, Mowat stands as the first BSU goaltender since BSU great Zuzana Tomcikova was selected to the team in 2008-09.
Brock Lutes – Men’s Basketball (Junior, Gaurd, Portland, Ore.)
A Second Team Dektronics All-Central Region pick, Lutes became the fifth BSU student-athlete to earn Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season. The junior was also named All-NSIC First Team after he became the seventh Bemidji State player to claim the NSIC scoring title when he posted a league-best 22.2 points per game. Logging 15 games with at least 20 points, including seven 30-point performances, Lutes totaled 574 points (21.3 ppg) to rank seventh on BSU’s single-season scoring chart. He shot 50.1 percent from the field on 207-of-413 shooting, which ranked him 15th in the nation (as of March 2) in total field goals made and 21st in total field goals attempted. His 21.3 points per game currently stands 24th in NCAA Division II. Lutes added 3.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 0.9 steals per game and shot 38.4 percent from 3-point land and 85.3 percent from the charity stripe.
