Well, this certainly has been an interesting week. If you look at the major college hockey websites, I’m not sure if Bemidji State has EVER been in the headlines as much as they have this week.
Omaha has a new Athletic Director…and a former broadcaster to boot! Trev Albert from ESPN fame is the new AD. He has NO EXPERIENCE in running an athletic department. What he does have, is a passion. Is that enough to get the job done well? Who knows. He has said this week that he wants his new department to “ride the coat-tails” of the hockey team. He has said “as hockey goes, so goes the department.”
I’m not sure if a football guy (he played at Nebraska) is the right guy for BSU to hang their hopes on. In the end, UNO needs to do what’s best for them. I’m a bit concerned, though, that being in football territory, they may want to keep Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame on their schedule.
Elsewhere, some writers have said that the WCHA is trying to “steal” a team for their own good…and don’t give a rats you-know-what about everyone else. I don’t buy that. The WCHA is the best league in the country. Don’t believe that…look at the bank account of the leagues, and you tell me which one is the “best”. While the WCHA has rules for expansion that nobody else has (size of buildings, staff requirements, etc.), the WCHA is also the only league that has the fan support to prove who’s the “best” league.
In this economy…in this era of college hockey (more teams folding than starting the sport)…everyone needs to look out for their own best interests. The WCHA, though, is also looking out for BSU’s best interests. The WCHA knows that BSU in their league makes the most sense. Everybody else knows that. So the WCHA is, to a certain extent, bending over backwards to help BSU.
If that makes some people feel that the WCHA is “stealing” a team…so be it. I call it doing something that makes sense.
The cake (BSU’s hockey resume) is impressive. The icing (Frozen Four trip) just makes the cake that much better.
