On Friday night, the Bemidji State women’s hockey team proved they have what it takes to knock off another highly ranked opponent despite a long month of road trips.
The Beavers got the scoring started at the 6:57 mark of the first period when senior captain Kristine Grenier battled for the puck behind the Badger net and popped it out to her line mate Hannah Moher who snuck in a wrap around goal past Wisconsin’s goaltender.
BSU would lead for nearly ten minutes when the 3rd ranked Badgers answered back to tie up the game 1-1.
The game would be tied until the 9:23 mark of the 3rd period when BSU’s freshman defender Emma Terres caught a pass from junior forward Kristin Huber to put the Beavers up 2-1.
The Beavers would have many other opportunities to increase their lead, including a short-handed shot by freshman blue liner Alexis Joyce that hit the crossbar along with another shot by Moher that clanked off the crossbar in the 3rd. Both were reviewed and waved off by the referees.
Bemidji State was backstopped by Brittni Mowat who stopped 40 of 41 shots on goal. Mowat also got some help from her teammates who blocked a total of 28 shots in the game, including a team high of 8 blocks by junior defender Ivana Bilic.
The Beavers were out shot by the Badgers 41-30 and the BSU penalty kill went 5 for 5 stopping 10 shots on goal during the Wisconsin powerplay.
With the 2-1 win, Brittni Mowat improves to 12-8-1 on the season. The Beavers are now 14-10-1 with a 9-9-1-1 record in WCHA play.
The 14 wins is now tied with the third most wins by a BSU women’s hockey team in a season (2010-11).
Game two of the weekend series against Wisconsin is at 3:07 p.m. at Labahn Arena in Madison, WI. The Benusa Pregame Show begins at 2:30 p.m. on the Beaver Radio Network and 1300 The Sports Fox.
