The Bemidji State women’s hockey team was backstopped again by stellar goaltending Saturday afternoon. Red-shirt freshman Erin Deters stopped 61 of 63 Wisconsin’s shots on net in front of a sell-out crowd of 2273 at Labahn Arena in Madison.
Like the first game of the weekend against the #3 Badgers, BSU would strike first. Stephanie Anderson scored her eighth goal of the season on a breakaway in the second period to put the Beavers up 1-0. The Badgers would again answer back just seven minutes later.
The game remained tied up 1-1 through regulation thanks in part to Deters’ spectacular saves, 31 blocked shots by the Beaver defense and a perfect penalty kill.
Wisconsin’s Brittany Ammerman tallied the game winning goal just 46 seconds into the overtime.
Bemidji State splits the road weekend, taking 3 points from Wisconsin after 2-1 win on Friday.
The 61 saves by Deters is 2nd most saves in a single game by a BSU women’s hockey goaltender. The record for most saves in a single game is 66, set by Janet Hicks in 1999.
The Beavers are now 14-11-1 overall and 9-10-1-1 in WCHA play.
BSU is back on the road next weekend for a Saturday/Sunday series in Grand Forks against UND.
