Bemidji State University women’s Hockey junior Brittni Mowat has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week after her efforts during Oct. 9-10. The Glenboro, Manitoba native guided the Beavers to the program’s first ever series sweep of the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Mowat was near perfect in the series after she stopped 62-of-63 shots for a .984 save percentage. The returning All-American opened the weekend with her second consecutive shutout, 12th of her career, in a 31-save performance to aid the Beavers in a 2-0 victory.

Mowat again made 31 saves the next night, including turning aside all 24 shots she faced from the second period on, as BSU rallied for a 2-1, overtime victory. Her 62 saves over the weekend were the fourth-highest in the country last week.

This marks the fourth time in her career that she has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.

In the latest USCHO.com national poll, Bemidji State jumped up one spot to No. 8 following their series sweep of UMD. The ranking marks the second highest in program history after BSU was ranked No. 7 in 2011-12.

BSU will continue WCHA play next weekend when they host the University of North Dakota Friday, Oct. 16 and then travel to Fargo, N.D. Saturday, Oct. 17.
