Bemidji State University forward Markus Gerbrandt has been selected for Western Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week honors following a four-point weekend at the North Star College Cup, Jan. 30-31.
Gerbrandt led Bemidji State to the North Star College Cup championship game with a WCHA-high four points (2g-2a) – including a career high-tying three in the Beavers’ semifinal victory over then-No. 20 Minnesota. The senior from Edmonton, Alberta had a hand in three of BSU’s goals in a 4-2 defeat of the Gophers, while scoring the game-winning marker on the power play with 3:54 remaining in regulation. Gerbrandt also assisted on the Beavers’ first goal of the game and added an empty-netter for the final margin. He added an assist in the championship.
This is Gerbrandt’s first WCHA weekly award of the 2015-16 season and second career accolade.
Gerbrandt has 19 points this season (5g-14a), which includes a career-high 14 assists.
BSU, now 11-11-5 overall, continues nonconference play after a week free of competition. The Beavers travel to University of Minnesota Duluth for a rare Tuesday matchup with the Bulldogs. The opening faceoff for the game originally scheduled for Oct. 9 is set for 7:07 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn.
