The Bemidji State University tennis team used a 7-2 victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth in Virginia, Minn. Sunday to improve to 2-0 to open the season.
Based on available records dating back to the 2004 season, the 2016 is the first BSU team to open a season with back-to-back wins.
BSU’s top singles pair of Shaylin Prout and Deanie Hatch dropped a 9-7 match to Drew DeCorsey and Shelby Benkofske, but the Beavers’ duo of Claudia Bellew and Justine Scheller were on the right side of a 9-7 match as No. 3 singles to give the Beavers a 2-1 advantage after doubles play.
Bemidji State dominated singles play earning five straight set victories. Hatch was the only BSU player to fall in singles play and it took a second-set rally (6-3) and a tie break to hand the BSU senior a loss (3-6, 6-3, 10-0).
The Beavers, now 2-0 overall, will travel to Grand Forks, N.D. Feb. 12-13, for a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match ups. BSU will battle Winona State University at 3:30 p.m. Friday before a 1 p.m. meeting with Upper Iowa.
