Bemidji State University softball junior Jessica Yost has been named as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, March 1. Yost helped the Beavers go 5-2 to open the 2016 season and went 4-0 in the pitcher’s circle during the week.
This is the first time in her career the Bemidji, Minn., native has earned this weekly award.
Yost started the week’s play by delivering a one-hit shutout of the University of Minnesota Duluth in a 1-0 victory and struck out a career best 16 batters. She helped the Beavers defeat the Bulldogs for a second time on Feb. 23 and Concordia-St. Paul on Feb. 27 before recording her second one-hit shutout of the week against Minot State University, Feb. 28.
During the week, Yost had an unblemished record at 4-0 and went all seven innings in every game. She tallied 46 strikeouts during the week and only walked one batter. The feat that is most impressive, however, is that she allowed only one earned run over the course of the week for an ERA of 0.25.
Yost and the Beavers will be back in action this week and travel to St. Paul, Minn., to take part in the Dragon-Beaver Battle II at the West St. Paul Dome. Bemidji State will face non-conference opponents Viterbo University and Dickinson State University as well as NSIC opponent Minnesota State University, Moorhead in a non-conference game.
