Freshman Will Czeh carded rounds of 78 (+7), 75 (+4) and 77 (+6) to finish tied for 24th individually with a 17-over-par 230 and lead the Bemidji State University men’s golf team to a fifth-place finish Tuesday at the Washburn University Invitational.

Bemidji State opened the event with a 307 (+23) to sit third after 18 holes, and finished day one in fifth place after recording another 307 (+23) in the final 18 holes, 36 shots off the pace set by the host, Washburn (288-290—578/+ +10). Scores were higher on day two, but the Beavers were unable to make up any ground, finishing fifth posting a 314 (+30) and a 54-hole total of 928 (+76).

Washburn went on to win the tournament with a 873 (288-290-295) to finish 21 over par and 13 strokes ahead of Lindenwood University (294-289-303—886/+34) and the rest of the 14-team field.

Czeh, who finished the event 15 strokes out of medalist contention, was one of two Beavers to finish among the top 30 on the leaderboard. Aaron Leintz tied for 30th place, carding rounds of 74 (+3), 75 (+4) and 83 (+12) to finish at 19-over-par (232).

Newcomer Sam Otto carded BSU’s best single round netting a two-over-par 73 on the first 18 holes of the event, while Cody Cook posted a hole-in-one, the first of his collegiate career, on the second hole of the tournament Monday.

Lindenwood’s Yente VanDoren posted the best individual score in the event, firing rounds of 71 (E), 73 (+2) and 71 (E) win the individual title with a 2-over-par 215.

The Beavers will be back in action March 25-26 when they travel to Smithville, Mo. and the Paradise Pointe Golf Complex to participate in the NSIC Spring Preview.
