Bemidji State University forward Phillip Marinaccio has been selected for Western Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week honors after helping lead the Beavers to a two-game WCHA series sweep of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Nov. 4-5.
Marinaccio led now-No. 15 Bemidji State to the road sweep, factoring in both game-winning goals and tying for the WCHA weekend lead with four points. The senior from Nobleton, Ontario tallied a goal and assist during the Beavers’ four-goal, third-period outburst in Friday’s series opener, scoring the eventual winner 1:02 into the stanza and helping on the final marker in a 6-2 victory. In Saturday’s series finale, he picked up an assist on the tie-breaking, game-winner before netting a third-period insurance goal as the Beavers won, 3-1. Marinaccio scored his two goals on just three shots, while finishing the weekend with a +3 rating.
In addition to Marinaccio, University of Alabama-Huntsville’s Kurt Gosselin was named defensive player of the week and Ferris State University goaltender Justin Kapelmaster earned the league’s rookie of the week honor.
This marks the second league honor of the senior’s career, as he also earned rookie of the week accolades during the 2013-14 campaign, and the Beavers’ fourth WCHA weekly award of the 2016-17 season. Marinaccio follows teammates Michael Bitzer, who earned the award Oct. 17 and 31, and freshman Zack Whitecloud, who was named rookie of the week following his collegiate debut, Oct. 7-8.
The Beavers, now 8-2-0 overall and 8-0-0 in league play, continues WCHA play this week as it travels to Mankato, Minn. for a two-game series at the Minnesota State University, Mankato. Both games are set for a 7:07 p.m. start.
