The post game for Bemidji State University women’s basketball was the feature Saturday night at BSU Gymnasium, as BSU won its season opener versus Mayville State University, 81-55. Freshman center Sydney Arrington scored 29 points and grabbed six rebounds in her collegiate debut for the Beavers (1-0).

BSU opened the game 0-of-2 shooting from the floor but found its groove quick while turning a 5-3 deficit into a 16-5 lead halfway through the first quarter. After allowing five points to the Comets in the first two minutes, the Beavers held them to just four through the remainder of the quarter to hold a 20-9 advantage heading into the second.

Three-point shooting in the second quarter set up BSU’s success in the post later in the game. The Beavers knocked down six 3s in the second period, including two from each senior guard Aimee Pelzer and Tatum Sheley. BSU held its foot on the gas while going on a 20-3 run to begin the quarter and take a first half high 27-point lead.

The Comets brought the Beavers’ lead down to under 20 points for a moment in the third quarter before BSU ended with a 56-35 lead after three. Arrington scored 16 of her 29 points in the fourth quarter, which was more than half of the team’s fourth quarter total of 25. The Beavers were able to bring the depth of the bench on to the court as the team reached a 30+-point lead three times over the final minutes.

Following Arrington’s 29 points was junior center Sierra Senske with 11 and Sheley with 10. BSU totaled 21 assists on 31 field goal conversions, led by Pelzer with six and sophomore forward Emma Rappe with five.

Bemidji State travels for the Huskies Classic Nov. 18 and 19, taking on Northland College Friday and Fort Hays State University Saturday.
