Senior guard Tatum Sheley made Bemidji State University women’s basketball history Saturday afternoon while becoming the 18th student-athlete all-time in program history to reach 1,000 career points. BSU (6-12, 3-11 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) fell to U-Mary (10-12, 5-9 NSIC), 76-66, despite Sheley’s career night to split its road weekend.
Sheley, entering the game needing 12 points to reach 1,000 in her career, began her memorable night with five of BSU’s first eight points to give the Beavers an 8-4 lead four minutes into play. BSU held U-Mary to 3-of-10 shooting from the field following that point while forcing two turnovers to hold an 18-12 lead after the first quarter of play.
The next score of the game for BSU would catapult Sheley to the 1,000-point club at BSU as she sank a 3-pointer from the corner on an assist from senior guard Aimee Pelzer. She became the 18th BSU player to reach 1,000 career points, following former guard Morgan Lee and center Kate Warmack who last reached the mark during Sheley’s freshman season in 2014. The 3-pointer gave Sheley 13 points in the game and a 21-14 lead for the Beavers.
Sheley led the Beavers with 25 points, her ninth career game with at least 20 points, on 8-for-16 shooting from the field and five-for-six from the free throw line. Pelzer followed with 15 points and six assists, to place her six behind Holley Logghe for seventh place all-time in BSU history with 273 career assists.
Bemidji State returns home for its sixth and seventh games at home in the previous nine against Concordia University-St. Paul and Minnesota State University, Mankato Jan. 27-28. The Beavers begin the weekend against NSIC South Division opponents with the Golden Bears at 6 p.m. Friday before hosting the Mavericks at 4 p.m. Saturday from BSU Gymnasium.
