Senior guard Aimee Pelzer became the 19th member of the 1,000-point club for Bemidji State University women’s basketball Saturday afternoon after scoring 23 points against Minnesota State University, Mankato. BSU (6-14, 3-12 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) fell to MSU (12-8, 8-8 NSIC) on the historic night, 75-64.
Pelzer joins fellow senior guard Tatum Sheley, who recorded her 1,000th career point a week prior, as one of five sets of Beavers women’s players in the same class to join the club. After opening her night with a 3-pointer, Pelzer sank a free throw early in the second quarter to reach the milestone.
The Beavers got off to a slow start shooting as the team missed its first seven shots from the field. The Mavericks took advantage of the start to build a 7-0 lead. Pelzer put in her first bucket of the day, a 3-pointer assisted by senior guard Allison Cordes, to snap the streak and bring her within one point of the 1,000 mark. Her 1,000th career point brought BSU within nine points of MSU, 23-14.
Three-pointers by junior guard Mikayla Larson and Cordes again cut the lead to five points, 27-22. The Mavericks were able to go ahead by nine points again, but the Beavers finished the quarter with two layups to trail, 33-28, heading into halftime.
Bemidji State takes to the road for four of its final six games of the regular season, first traveling to Wayne State College and Augustana University. The Beavers and Wildcats tip off from Wayne, Neb., Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. before heading to Sioux Falls, S.D., Feb. 4 for a 4 p.m. game-time versus the Vikings.
