The Bemidji State University tennis team used a pair of non-conference wins to pick up its 10th victory of the 2017 season and improve to 6-0 outside league play, Sunday at the Gillett Wellness Center. The Beavers opened the day with a 9-0 victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston before closing the weekend with a 9-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

BSU’s 10th win marks the second consecutive season that the Beavers have reached double figures in wins. A year ago, under head coach Mark Fodness, the Beavers posted a program record 11 wins en route to its first trip to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament since 2009.

The Beavers made quick work of the Golden Eagles in the first match of the day. UMC spotted BSU a point in doubles and another in singles putting the Beavers up 2-0 before the teams step onto the court. Sabrina Okeson and Breann Walsh gave BSU a 3-0 lead with a 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles and Morgan Opp and Zoe Lindgren continued the roll with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.

Hope Johnson scored BSU’s first point in singles play, winning her No. 5 singles match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. It was the first of five straight-set wins as Brooke Mimmack (No. 3) and Claudia Bellew (No. 4) posted 6-0, 6-0 wins, Hanna Alme won her debut at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0 and Opp posted a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 1 singles position to complete the sweep, 9-0.

In the matinee, the pair of Okeson and Walsh again got BSU out of the gates, posting 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles to open the 9-0 win. Alme and Ariadna Lopez-Simo followed with an 8-1 win at No. 2 before Opp and Lindgren completed the doubles sweep, 8-2, in the No. 1 slot.

Mimmack improved to 12-0 on the season in singles play, netting a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 6 match. Walsh followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 and Alme won her No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-0. Lopez-Simo collected a 6-0, 6-1 win in her only singles match of the day at No. 3 before Lindgren won 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 position and Opp completed her weekend 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in her No. 1 singles match.

The Beavers, now 10-3 overall, return to action April 1-2 when they travel to Duluth, Minn. for a pair of NSIC matches. BSU will battle the University of Mary at 5 p.m. Saturday before it faces Minnesota State University-Moorhead in a 8:45 a.m. match up Sunday.
