Bemidji State University men’s basketball separated midway through the first half Monday night to take the cross-town battle against Oak Hills Christian College, 115-50, at BSU Gymnasium. Sophomore forward Lucas Wendt helped provide a positive example on Bemidji Youth Basketball Day, leading the Beavers (3-2) with 17 points in the single-game program record win.

Both teams stayed close together throughout the first eight and a half minutes of action, kicked off by a put back by senior guard Sharif Black off his own offensive miss. The game was tied six times through the opening stretch, while Oak Hills Christian took its final lead of the night, 15-14, at 12:06 in the first half.

Following the Wolfpack lead, the Beavers went on a 35-12 run to finish the first half and held OHCC to 33.3 percent shooting from the field. Bemidji State shot 48.7 percent during the first half, led by sophomore forward Lucas Wendt with 14 points and sophomore guard Jai’Vionne Green with 10 points through the first half.

The run continued into the second half as the Beavers used a balanced attack, led by freshman guard Mike Shepski and freshman forward Derek Thompson with six points each during a 25-5 run. Bemdiji State forced nine turnovers, as many as the entire first half, during the early second half run that lasted through the first eight minutes of play.

Bemidji State finished shooting 54.2 percent from the field during the game and 42.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Beavers also took care of the basketball with efficient ball movement, creating 28 assists and turning the ball over just nine times.

All but two Beavers recorded points on the night, led by Wendt with 17 and followed by Shepski with 15, Green with 14, Thompson with 12 and sophomore guard Jacob McNallan with 12. Black was two rebounds shy of a double-double, finishing with 11 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Christian Pekarek recorded eight assists.

Bemidji State set the program’s all-time largest margin of victory at 65 points, following a 61-point win against Finalndia Nov. 21, 2012.

Bemidji State begins Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with a trip to Crookston, Minn., to take on University of Minnesota Crookston. The Beavers and Golden Eagles tip-off the 64th game of the all-time series Saturday, Nov. 25 at 4 p.m. from Lysaker Gymnasium.
