Baseball plays final games Friday and Saturday versus UMD

Bemidji State University baseball wraps up the 2022 season with its last week of games the University of Minnesota Duluth May 6-7 in Bemidji, Minn. BSU plays a three-game series against UMD for the first and last games at BSU Baseball Field.

Bemidji State will honor nine seniors during Saturday’s season finale and senior day against Minnesota Duluth. Those being recognized include Jackson Back, Parker Borg, Travis Carruth, Alex Fietek, Sam Kalberer, Tom Keohen, Stephan Lagasse, John Perkins and MacGregor Sharpe.

Bemidji State was swept by Northern State University, 4-0 and 4-3, April 27 in Aberdeen, S.D., and Southwest Minnesota State University May 1, 8-7 and 8-1, in Marshall, Minn.

The Beavers held leads heading into the eighth inning of both game twos against the Wolves and Mustangs.

BSU took a 5-0 lead after the first inning of game one against SMSU, including a two-RBI double by sophomore Jack Munson and a two-run home run by senior Parker Borg. Munson also hit a two-run home run in the third inning and finished the game 4-of-4 from the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore Wyatt Hamann led BSU over the week hitting .333 from the plate with three hits and one RBI. Munson followed hitting .313 from the plate with five hits, four RBI, two runs, one home run and one double.

Junior pitcher Jackson Back started game two against Northern State, going 7.2 innings with a season-high five strikeouts and two earned runs allowed.

Junior pitcher Logan Barrick started the opening game against Southwest Minnesota State with 6.0 innings, six strikeouts, six hits and four earned runs allowed.

Senior Sam Kalberer leads BSU this season hitting .312 from the plate with a .456 slugging percentage and a .411 on-base percentage. He also leads the team with 57 total bases, 17 walks and six doubles.

Senior Alex Fietek leads the BSU pitching staff with a 4.67 ERA in 17.1 innings and eight appearances.

Freshman pitcher Isaiah Biehn holds a 5.11 ERA in 37.0 innings this season, including starts over his last five outings. He has totaled 18 strikeouts to nine walks and is holding opposing batters to a .262 average from the plate.

The Bulldogs are led by 22nd-year head coach Bob Rients who is 363-414 leading the program.

Minnesota Duluth went 2-3 over its last five games, losing both games of a doubleheader at St. Cloud State University on April 27 and winning two of three against Minot State May 1-2.

The Bulldogs are hitting .282 from the plate with 355 hits, 74 doubles, 21 home runs, 208 RBI and 226 runs scored.

UMD’s pitchers hold an ERA of 7.24, allowing 391 hits and 168 walks with 246 strikeouts.
