In its first action in 248 days, the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team fell to St. Cloud State University 3-2 in the 3-on-3 overtime period Thursday night. Twice the Beavers (0-1-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) bounced back from one-goal deficits to tie the game but a goal by the Huskies’ (2-3-0, 2-3-0 WCHA) Emma Gentry 2:37 into the extra frame gave the Huskies two points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
Seniors Lydia Passolt and Clair DeGeorge each scored for the Beavers with DeGeorge adding an assist while senior defenseman Tina Kampa recorded two assists in the game. Senior Kerigan Dowhy made 27-of-30 saves but falls to 0-1-0 on the season.
St. Cloud State started the scoring in the first period when Taylor Lind scored at the 10:21 mark of the opening frame. Bemidji State failed to find the equalizer in the remaining period but at 9:25 in the second period, Passolt received a pass from DeGeorge above the left circle and sniped the puck past goaltender Emma Polusny for the equalizer and Beavers’ first goal of the 2020-21 season.
The second period continued without another score but just 3:40 into the third period, St. Cloud State took the lead again when Jenniina Nylund scored her second goal of the season after beating Dowhy. However, just 3:45 later and short-handed, DeGeorge went streaking up the ice and powered to the front of the net and beat Polusny to the near post to once again tie the game.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the remaining time and headed to the 3-on-3 overtime period. Both teams had quality chances at the game-winning goal but it would be SCSU’s Gentry who found the back of the net first with 2:37 left in the period.
Bemidji State falls to 0-1-0 after its first game of the season but earned one point in the WCHA standings with the overtime loss. St. Cloud State improves its record to 2-3-0 (2-3-0 WCHA) and snapped a three-game losing streak.
Dowhy finished the game with 27 saves on 30 shots while Polusny made 27 saves on 29 shots and earned her first win of the season.
