Wendt leads Bemidji State to 6-0 win at MSU Moorhead

Sara Wendt scored twice and Ally Smith added a goal and two assists, while Alyssa Stumbaugh and Georgiana Harber combined for a shutout as the Bemidji State University soccer team defeated Minnesota State University Moorhead 6-0 to officially open its 2021 spring season.

It was a cool, damp afternoon in Moorhead, Minn., but it didn’t take the Beavers long to warm up Monday. Wendt got BSU on the board in the 11th minute on a pass from Smith. In the end, that was all the offense the Bevers would need, but BSU was far from over. Smith got in on the scoring 16 minutes (27th) later netting her first goal of the season to put BSU up 2-0 heading into halftime.

BSU outshot the Dragons 10-2 in the second half netting four goals. Freshman Anna Breffle took a pass from Emma Mortensen and Alexis Larson for her first collegiate goal in the 51st minute. Sophomore Maggie Cade posted an unassisted goal in the 61st minute to lock up her second career goal and put BSU up 4-0. Alanna Mattson took a feed from Harber and Erin Becker for the first goal of her senior campaign in the 64th minute and Wendt completed the 6-0 win in the 72nd minute. Madisanne Dahl and Smith were credited with assists on the junior’s second goal of the match.

Stumbaugh started in goal for the Beavers and logged 45 minutes of action to get credit for the victory. She improves to 1-0-0 on the season and 6-2-0 in her BSU career. Harber played the second half and posted two saves in relief to complete the team shutout.

The Beavers will return to Chet Anderson Stadium to host MSU Moorhead again Friday to break the seal on their 2021 home schedule. The game is set for a 6 p.m. opening kick, which can be heard on the Beaver Radio Network.
