Peacocks take doubleheader Tuesday over Beaver Baseball
Bemidji State University baseball fell in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday against Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. The Beavers fell 4-0 in game one and 19-2 in game two to drop to 4-23 overall and 1-12 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Game One – Upper Iowa, 4-0
Two Upper Iowa batters recorded bunt singles to start the first inning while the Peacocks scored the first run on a wild pitch. Senior Sam Kalberer recorded the first of BSU’s three hits in the game with a double in the first inning before being stranded.
Freshman Isaiah Biehn (0-2) stranded two UIU runners in each of the second and third inning before the Peacocks scored runs on a solo home run and a fielding error for a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth. UIU’s final run came in the sixth inning as a hit by pitch set up an RBI single.
BSU totaled seven baserunners, five left on base, and went 1-of-7 from the plate with runners in scoring position. Biehn threw 6.0 innings with two strikeouts, two walks and three earned runs.
Game Two – Upper Iowa, 19-2
The Peacocks jumped ahead in the first inning again as six baserunners crossed home to start the game. Upper Iowa totaled three hits as three Bemidji State errors led to a 6-0 UIU lead. The Peacocks added to its lead with four runs on four hits in the top of the second inning to go ahead 10-0.
Senior Parker Borg doubled in the bottom of the first inning for the first of BSU’s two hits in the game. Sophomore Michael O’Malley singled down the left field line in the bottom of the second inning to set up runners on first and third with two outs. Junior John Perkins put the ball in play to left field during the next at-bat, leading to a fielding error and two runs to score to cut the BSU deficit to eight, 10-2.
Bemidji State travels back to Bemidji, Minn., for a home weekend series April 9-10 against the University of Sioux Falls at BSU Baseball Field.
