Women’s hockey falls to #1 Wisconsin

The Bemidji State Women’s hockey team hosted the University of Wisconsin Badgers this past weekend at the Sanford Center and despite a valiant effort, the Beavers were unable to forge a win either night over the nations top team.

Friday night, BSU fell 7-1 with their lone goal coming off the stick of red-shirt sophomore Abby Williams. It was Abby’s first career goal wearing the green and white.

Saturday night the Beavers were back stopped by junior goaltender Alana McElhinney who has been filling in for starter Zuzana Tomcikova for the past two weekends. McElhinney recorded 43 saves as her team battled into overtime. BSU lost the season series finale to the high powered offense of the Badgers in a 3-2 overtime heart breaker.

Tomcikova returns to BSU in time for the upcoming series after her stint with her Slovakian National Team at the 2011 University Games in Turkey. She helped her team defeat USA 3-1 in the bronze medal game. Congratulations Zuzana!

The Beavers are currently in 5th place in the WCHA standings with only four regular season games left. They are looking to snap a four game losing streak this weekend against the University of Minnesota at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. The Beavers faceoff against the Gophers at 6:07pm Friday and 4:07pm Saturday. Join Kelly Schultz for the Budweiser Pregame Show beginning each night 37 minutes prior to faceoff on the Beaver Radio Network and Lite Rock 92.1 FM.
